What the hell is wrong with Star Wars?
Ok, I saw "Revenge Of The Sith", 12:01 at the Orleans. I was so ready to dig this film. Somehow my fanboy side had actually made me forget the tragedy laden first two films of the prequels. I went crazy when "Phantom menace" hit. I saw that film 7 times in the theatre. Looking back I think I was desperately hoping that the movie would transform on subsequent viewings into something I could love. There was cool stuff in the flick, Darth Maul was kind of neat. The first five minutes of Phantom is quite good. Fast Jedi action, cool new uses of lightsabers. Still ultimately it is not enough to save it from being mediocre and for the most part just boring. Now we are at Revenge. What did I want from this movie? Everything. I do not blame Lucas entirely for this let down I feel. I was searching for celluloid redemption and nirvana, that state of bliss that washes over me when the battle of Hoth erupts in its majesty. What I got in this movie was hundreds of things happening on the screen at once, overloading my head and tempting me to just sit back and eat up the eye candy. Instead my teeth rotted out from all the sugary CGI while I starved for the meat of a story or character development to nourish me. This movie was behind the 8ball from the get go. Huge expectations from fans and a real need to make up for the terrible failings of the first two episodes. It was a hurdle perhaps too high for any man to clear. Again the beginning of the movie is great for about 3-5 minutes. After that it's all Keystone Kapers with the battle droids. All the villains are wasted. Dooku could have served the role of grievous without having to construct yet another marginally interesting baddie whose only job in the film is to be killed. Anakin never truly crosses over to the dark side. He weeps remorsefully as he murders Jedi babies. This is the ultimate problem with the movie. Lucas has chosen to show us that deep down Vader is just confused and he is really killing people out of a good place in his heart, he is just blinded and corrupted by the voice of an evil man.
BULLSHIT !
Darth Vader is a creature driven by hate. I felt that He never gave himself over to hate completely until he was in 4 pieces on the ground and on fire. Even then he wusses out and asks about Padme as soon as the helmet is on. He just tried to kill her! Why does he even care? Anakin should be dead and gone with only Vader left in his shadow. Yes, we see he had a good little nougat center in "Jedi" when he chucks old Palpateen over the rail, but that's all we need. I don't know. I really do understand what George is trying to do here It just doesn't work for me. Hayden Christensen was abysmal yet again. Only Ewin Macgregor has been quality throughout the whole saga.
In summary, I was just really sad to see it over without ever reaching the potential I felt was there. The videogame for the film is the superior story telling device. As disapointed in this film as I was, I will allways love Star Wars. May the force be with you.
